We were approached by Monster to create the opener and supporting graphics for the documentary series "Last: Jøder" ("Cargo: Jews").
The series depicts the deportation of jews in Norway during the second world war.
Through time-witness interviews with the people who were young back then, embellished by colourised black-and-white photos, the past is brought closer to the present telling their stories to a young audience.
On November 1, 1942, the ship Donau leaves the harbor in Oslo. On board are 529 children, elderly, women, and men. In the Oslo harbor ship log, it is meticulously recorded: Last: Jøder (Cargo: Jews).
A total of 773 Jews from Norway were sent to the German concentration camps. Only 38 survived. About one third of the 2100 jews in Norway perished during the war.

Opener
The Visual Concept
The producers of the series wanted a visual expression that was both modern and youthful, while also respectful of the delicate topic of the series.
The colour palette is inspired by the pastel colours of the 1930s and 40s, taking a step away from the classic black-and-white war documentary to instead reflect the colourful personalities of the people telling their stories in the series.
The typography makes use of the classic Futura from the same period, combined with the bold, contemporary font Cosi Azure to create a clear identity for the series reaching out to a younger audience.
In the opener, hundreds of portraits of Jews who lived in Norway during World War II are shown. About one-third of the 2100 Norwegian Jews perished during the war, and this is reflected in the graphic pattern that covers the images at the end of the opener.
The portraits also form a simple three-dimensional graphic shape that refers to the Holocaust monument in Berlin – a monument in memory of the Jews who were killed during World War II.
